Situation
While growing Ecozaar’s organic presence, the site was hit by a serious hack. Attackers injected over 3 million spam pages into the domain, which Google indexed rapidly.
The damage was significant:
- 3 million+ spam doorway pages appeared in Google’s index, polluting the site’s topical authority.
- Google’s automated systems flagged the domain and suppressed key commercial pages.
- Organic traffic dropped from its growing baseline to around 40,000 monthly visits.
What I Did
1. Finding and Removing the Malware
- Ran a full file integrity check and database audit to find compromised scripts and backdoor access points.
- Removed all malicious database tables and blocked the entry points used by attackers.
- Added server-level security headers (Content-Security-Policy, X-Content-Type-Options, Strict-Transport-Security).
2. Cleaning Google’s Index
- Set up HTTP 410 (Gone) status codes for all spam URLs so Google would remove them from its index quickly.
- Submitted a clean XML sitemap containing only legitimate pages with correct lastmod headers.
- Ran a backlink audit and submitted a disavow file to remove any toxic links the hack may have created.
3. Rebuilding Organic Health
- Re-linked core commercial pages to channel ranking power back to revenue-driving URLs.
- Fixed Core Web Vitals issues that had worsened during the attack period.
- Monitored GSC daily until all spam warnings cleared and index health was restored.
Results
- Organic traffic recovered from 40,000 to 75,000 monthly visits within the recovery window.
- All 3 million+ spam pages were removed from Google’s index with zero residual flags in Search Console.
- Set up ongoing security monitoring and automated GSC alerts to catch any future issues early.
